One of the
fundamental elements that lies at the core of the Bahai Faith is
the belief that each individual must
independently investigate the truth for him or her
self. Bahá'ís
believe that truth exists, and that therefore humans not only have
the ability to recognize it, but the obligation to seek it out for
themselves rather than see it through the eyes of others.
This concept of the
individual search for truth is central to the "Informal Discussions".
Most discussions are held in private homes or apartments, with a small
number of people gathering together in a comfortable setting.
Typically, a Bahá'í
(there is no clergy or priesthood) will
give a brief introduction. Following this is a question and answer
period. There is no obligation of any sort placed on the guests.
Those who wish to investigate further are encouraged to read one or
more of the many Bahá'í
publications, and to return with more questions!

At the dawn of every world Religion, in
that period of time when everyone believed that the new Prophet
(Moses, Buddha, Christ, Muhammad, etc) was false, it was exceedingly
difficult to penetrate the veils of disbelief and lies to hear what
He had to say to hear the Word of God. The early followers of
these Religions had to suffer persecutions and death for their
newfound Faith, but they overcame everything, and built new
civilizations of surpassing beauty. They carried mankind forward
through successive stages of unity: the family, tribe, city-state,
and 1300 years ago, the worlds first nation.
Today, as in the past, the acceptance of God and His
Manifestation remains the most challenging issue facing an
individual. To become a believer one must find faith, and the home
of faith is the heart. It is in the heart where the battle is won or
lost.
The act of becoming a Bahá'í is intensely personal. It involves
a spiritual contract between you and God. Acceptance into the Bahá'í
community is a separate act, and involves your signing a short
statement which reads:
"In signing this card, I declare my belief in Baháulláh,
the Promised One of God. I also recognize the Báb,
His Forerunner, and `Abdul-Bahá,
the Center of His Covenant. I request enrollment in the Bahá'í
Community, with the understanding that Baháulláh has
established sacred principles,
laws,
and institutions which I must obey."
Reaching this decision may take a moment, or it may take years of
questioning and searching. Your journey has now begun. May God guide
you and protect you.
